Tom Cruise Great Actor

Add Comment

At the MTV Movie Awards last Sunday night, Tom Cruise stole the show by reviving the character Les Grossman, the character he played to rave reviews in the 2008 film "Tropic Thunder."

Tom Cruise's Les Grossman at the MTV Movie Awards went over so well that, yesterday, to a few, if to anybody's surprise, Paramount Studios announced that the Tom Cruise's Les Grossman character will get his own movie. See the video.

Producer Hurts 'Locker Hurt'

Academy AwardsAcademy Awards"The Hurt Locker" has been hurt by its co-producer campaigning for the Oscar. Campaigning for an Oscar? Who would have thought it? Everybody!

Well, 'The Hurt Locker' co-producer Nicolas Chartier will be banned from the Academy Awards ceremony on March 7  for campaigning in a manner that is unbecoming for an Oscar campaigner. Well, what did he do? He wrote an email urging his friends to urge Academy Awards members to choose his movie, over the popular favorite, by the masses and the peons, that flick Avatar, for Best Picture.

Action Stars and Silly Movies

Ever noticed that the beefed up action stars have done some really weird movies in their time? And I don't mean the kapow-swish-swash fighting stuff. Oh no, not in the way Steven Seagal stayed true to his calling while exploring other genres (a debacle aka Against the Dark). I refer to those horrid acting roles that these fighting folk take on. Maybe it is an attempt to stop being typecast. Maybe it is brave attempt to explore their acting talents. I'm sorry, I couldn't say that with a straight face. So, whilst I get over that last thought, enjoy this list of funky movie roles:

Language Barrier in Stargate

Dude, you use this gym too?Dude, you use this gym too?
Stargate SG-1, a show about traveling to other planets via a Gate, has been criticized by many fans for the way it handled the language barrier. In their view, the show took the easy way out on this matter by creating a vast number of alien races that, rather conveniently, spoke English. Thus, unlike Star Trek which had a linguist and a universal translator and, in most cases, an indignant-looking Worf, SG teams never really fretted about such details. Or so they say. How true is this argument?

Admittedly, Star Trek took more effort to cover the language aspect of an alien species almost as much as they stressed about their cultural aspects. As an example, think of the time the dear delectable Picard (yes, I am a fan, how did you know?) struggled to learn the Tamarian language in season 5.

Weird Movie Deaths

I read somewhere that Equilibrium's John Preston had the highest kills for one character. Well, it's certainly not true anymore … right? I don't think anyone has tallied up the numbers from each and every movie out there but many sites are trying. Well, while trying to find out if the delightful Cleric did hold the title to most kills, I came across these weird facts:

Stargate Atlantis: Familiar Faces

Scifi actors seem to pop up in any other scifi shows, don't they? Not that I am complaining. It's just somewhat weird for folks watching something with you. In such cases, you are likely to slap your forehead and exclaim 'Of course, that's Trip!' For anyone else who loves spotting these details (strangely enough the aforementioned friends of mine were not so appreciative of such interruptions), here are a few from Stargate Atlantis:

Cheesy Series about Superheroes

I recently checked up on old favorites from my kiddy days. You know, Spiderman, Highlander series, not to mention the Gummi Be… Anyway, point is, it was a trip down memory lane that brought up some fun classics from the past. Some of these shows are laughably funny now while others still look pretty awesome. How bad did it get in the good old days? Have we learnt since then?

The Misunderstood: The Fountain

Darren Aronofsky is a rare species in the film industry. He's a director who has never made a mainstream film, yet has somehow found a way to coax multimillion dollar budgets out of producers and grab a stunning array of actors to star in his left-field projects. Aronofsky's work is certainly an acquired taste, but I'll contend that much of the ill will surrounding his films is thanks to bad luck, negligent marketing and a distinct authorial voice that, when it chooses a moral stance, presents its case in jarring visuals rather than simple exposition. His gorgeous twice-over flop The Fountain, of all of his films, deserves a reevaluation.

Modern vampiric worries: Bad hair and love issuesModern vampiric worries: Bad hair and love issues
I know everyone blames Twilight for the annoying sparky makeover that vampires have received. Alright, so to a large extent they are right. But, Twilight indicates a general trend in the depiction of vampires which can be seen from the strangely emo vampires from True Blood. Generally, it is a conscious effort in creating a new vampire, one that is a far cry from the fang boys we old foggies loved and adored. Let's go through the various vampires and how changed over time, shall we?
