When my husband and I were watching Live Free or Die Hard (again) over the weekend, he suddenly shouted, “Look! Look!” I jumped, figuring there was a big spider next to me, but he was pointing at a bloody Bruce Willis careening an 18-wheeler down the streets of Washington, D.C. In one scene, Bruce—or “John McClane”—is smashing into a car, causing damage to his vehicle; in the next, the big rig is unscathed. Bloo-per!
That made me wonder, just how many bloopers are in the Die Hard films? It turns out that there are plenty—enough to write a novel on them. But I’ll spare you the gory details and just give you some of the best bloopers from the action-packed series.
During Die Hard, John McClane is barefoot for the majority of the movie—except, of course, when jumping off a building, during which his rubber shoes are visible.
The eyes of the dead guy in the elevator close just as Hans touches his face—and while “dead,” he also jumps a little to avoid getting hit.
In Die Hard 2, John uses a Pacific Bell payphone—a West Coast company. Are we back in California again, John?
And a manhole? In the middle of a runway? No such thing.
That idiot reporter giving an “exclusive” in the bathroom—you know, the one Holly punches out in the first movie? He’s an even bigger idiot that we thought, since half of his report is given to an upside-down phone.
And Holly’s plane is an L-1011 TriStar, which has three engines; so why does her pilot work four throttles? (And in one of the shots of Holly on the plane, you can see the blue screen behind her window!)
And in the last scene when John and Holly are driving off “in the sunset” in the golf cart (toward an unhappily-ever-after as we find out in sequels), is that really the tumultuous couple—or a couple of dummies about to fall out?
During Die Hard with a Vengeance, we know that John must have taken this wild route through Central Park before; why else would his tire marks already be there before driving through?
Though Zeus is supposed to visit the home team’s side of Yankee stadium, he finds his “clue” on the visitor’s side.
In the helicopter scene supposedly taking place in Canada, why is there an American grocery store, Giant Food, advertised there? Maybe because the scene was really shot in Maryland!
Near the end of the film, a female boom mike operator can be spotted in a scene.
And in Live Free or Die Hard, when Ferrell goes off on one of his rants at John—right after the Eastern Power Plant blow-up—his mouth doesn’t match his words (I caught this one first time around!).
One of McClane’s injuries, a cut above his eyebrow, shows up in a scene before he actually gets the cut.
And John’s daughter Lucy must have had a pair of spare shoes with her while being abducted by terrorists, because in one scene she is wearing boots and in her next scene, sandals.
Have fun reviewing the Die Hard movies, and be sure to post any other bloopers you see.
